The Egg Fast My Way

Alright, guys, I'm taking on the one food I hate most; EGGS!

When Justin and I gifted mom a Spring trip to Maui, being back into crappy old eating habits and moving away from my lowest weight was NOT what I had in mind. It was time to get focused and so I decided to take on the one thing I thought I'd always stay away from; the infamous egg fast! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

If you know me well or have even read this far into my blog post, you'll have gathered that I'm not a huge fan of eggs. I don't know what it is about them, but I've hated 'em since I was a kid!

Nonetheless, I'm still intrigued by the egg fast because it's supposed to come with a few health benefits and a bit of weight loss. (I'm totally convinced it's water weight and the fact that the calorie consumption is very low, but it's a total reset that I'm after so here it goes!)

Here are the traditional "rules" of the egg fast below, but to keep things manageable for myself I'll be tweaking things just a touch. I figure it will either work for me or it won't, but I know I can't be successful without customizing the plan for my lifestyle at least a bit. (So not into giving up my coffee with cream or my energy drinks! ๐Ÿ˜œ)

Traditional Egg Fast--

Here's what I ate over the 3 days that I fasted. To be honest, the only written rule I broke was not eating within 30 minutes of waking up. I did, however, sip on my morning coffee during that time and I also used a few seasonings/broths during the 3-day stretch.

So how did it go for me?

Going to bed after day one, I was feeling good with my choices and sticking with it. (I reeeeeeeeally hate eggs!) But when I went to test my ketones before my coffee on day two, the meter was actually reading low. When I looked up what that meant, the meter was finding such a trace amount of ketones it couldn't even register it!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฆMy ketone levels had actually dropped and I was thoroughly confused.

Why were my ketones dropping?!?!

Even though I use a blood meter to test, I thought something had to be wrong. My mom let me use her ketone breath meter and it confirmed a very low level of ketosis. I seriously wanted to give up right then and there because it seemed like this was NOT working for me. However, I wanted to give it a true trial so, I'd have to carry on despite the discouragement. The next day I checked twice and my ketone levels dropped even more. I was almost through the fast at this point though, I was determined to finish it out.

At the end of it all, the egg fast just isn't for me. I'm glad I tried it because at the very least it allowed me three days of extreme discipline over my appetite. I learned that if I can eat eggs, the thing I hate most, for 3 days, it should be easier to make good choices on a more consistent basis.

Unfortunately, the egg fast also didn't agree with my stomach. Progressively the issues I was having got worse each day. I even had to take a day off from work to recover! It was kind of ridiculous.

My mom did the fasting alongside me and she was doing great with ketone levels, but the scale wasn't budging for her. Then on day 3 she also started having stomach issues. ๐Ÿ˜ซShe lost a total of 2.5 pounds.

I weighed in on the morning of day 4 and I lost 6.4 lbs!!!

While mom and I saw a pretty decent loss for both of us, I honestly know neither of us will do this again. The weight loss truly wasn't worth it-- we pull these numbers when we're focused, exercising and eating well. The true benefits I was hoping to receive of elevated ketones just didn't happen either.

Both mom and I think the weight will pack right back on after real food is eaten, so I'll keep you updated!
